Creola Thomas

 Creola Thomas is a writer, educator, and advocate whose storytelling is deeply rooted in the experiences of growing up in the heart of Chicago’s housing projects. As a child, she often struggled to feel “normal,” navigating a world that did not always seem designed for someone with her unique way of seeing and experiencing it. What sustained her was her imagination—the stories she created in her mind and, eventually, the stories she shared with others.

Long before she considered herself a writer, Creola was already a storyteller. She captivated neighborhood children with vivid tales, often convincing them that she had discovered secret portals hidden throughout the neighborhood that could transport her to other worlds. Imagination became her escape, her playground, and ultimately, her calling.

After high school, Creola attended Columbia College Chicago, where she studied Theatre with a minor in Fiction Writing. There, she discovered the craft behind the stories she had been carrying inside her for years. More importantly, she found a creative community where her imagination was not something to hide—it was something to embrace.

Today, Creola writes with the same sense of wonder that captivated children in her neighborhood decades ago. Her work explores identity, belonging, faith, community, and the extraordinary possibilities that can emerge from ordinary lives.

She is a mother, educator, advocate for children in foster care, and the author of several books, including Twin Spirits and Adventures with the Shortiez. Through her writing and community work, she continues to use storytelling as a way to inspire young people, open difficult conversations, and remind readers that where you come from does not have to determine where you are going.

When she isn't writing, Creola enjoys a quiet moment with a good book and a hot cup of coffee—sometimes marveling at the journey from a little girl growing up in poverty to a woman who turned the worlds she once imagined into stories others can now enter.
